Public Murals
Island Coffee Shop

This is a painting I did for a wonderful local coffee shop in Staten Island that has almost become a second home for many of it's neighboring residents. It's one of those places like "Cheers" where the phrase "everybody knows your name" really applies. Great food and a cozy atmosphere has made it a part of so many peoples daily rituals. The owner George is a great guy and has run the Island Coffee Shop for decades now.

One day he had mentioned to me that it would be great if I did a painting of his diner, which I was more than happy to do. After thinking about how I would handle the scene, I wanted to depict it in a way that was more than just a simple rendering of the exterior, but rather a representation of what the diner meant to me.

Every week after coming home from work, usually a Thursday or Friday, my wife and I would stop there for dinner, especially during the cold winter months. It would always looked so inviting from the outside, this warm little oasis from the cold, with familiar friends and faces inside winding down after a long day. And this was the charm of the Island Coffee Shop. I wanted to capture that feeling in the painting that would draw people in from the cold, seeing the warm laughter and good times that awaited inside.

Me and George

Here I am presenting George with the completed painting which I gave to him as a gift. Since then, the coffee shop has relocated a few blocks away from it's original location on Victory Boulevard, along Manor Road in Westerleigh. The painting prouldy hangs inside this very special place that has become a large part of our lives.
You can visit the Island Coffee Shop at 407 Manor Road in Staten Island anytime and enjoy good food and good times!
